Teacher, Writer, Scholar
focussing on the literature, art, and culture of medieval Scandinavia and German-speaking lands

ABOUT
Professor of German Emerita, Duke University (North Carolina)
Former Rgt Honorable John G. Diefenbaker Memorial Chair of German Literary Studies, University of Waterloo (Ontario, Canada), 2015–2024
Understanding the histories and peoples of the medieval past is my passion. I research, write, and teach about the medieval worlds of German-speaking lands and Scandinavia. Stories, documents, art, and material culture, read in their original languages and examined in their original historical contexts, serve as my window onto that past. My curiosity takes me further afield, too. Relying on English translations, I read widely in non-European literatures of the Middle Ages. I also teach and write about putting writing first as a key move in conducting trustworthy research.
